The size of a drill press is measured in terms of swing. Swing is twice the throat distance, which is the distance from the center of the chuck to the closest edge of the post. For example, a 16-inch drill press will have an 8-inch throat distance.

they are the distance from the drill table to the bit…but dont think they have anything to do with the length of travel for the drill bit…

The measurement refer to the distance from the table to the drill chuck, and the travel of the drill bit.
